British actor Alan Rickman has died at 69 years old. His family has said that he died “surrounded by family and friends”, and that he had been privately suffering from cancer.
Rickman starred as Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis’s adversary in Die Hard. Gruber was the first of memorable baddies played by Rickman: he played Professor Severus Snape in Harry Potter, a sheriff of Nottingham in 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as a terrifying Rasputin in a 1995 HBO film. Rickman was no stranger to Broadway as well, his breakthrough was in 1986 as Valmont, the mordant seducer in Christopher Hampton’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which got him a nomination for a Tony Award. We’ll Miss you Alan!
